Germany is today the country of the middle. The very fact that she is currently divided into two states, one influenced by the west and one by the East, underlines this statemenet. Throughout modern history she has been conditone by her proximity to the Slavic east, the latin south, and the Gallic West. However, during the first thousand years and more of the Christian era, Germany was not the land of the middle. She was the frontier land between the classical, Christian culture of the west and south of Europe and the semibarbarous, pagan culture of the east and north. An important aspect of medieval history is the gradual integration of these areas into the Christian community, much of this work was done through Germany and by Germans. [download]
