Fanny Dunbar Corbusier-Recollections of Army Life in The Frontier West

Fanny Dunbar Corbusier-Recollections of Army Life in The Frontier West

Edited By: Patricia Y. Stallard

Fanny Dunbar Corbusier never intended her “Recollections” for the world at large. In her humility, she thought that her memories of army life might be “of more than ordinary interest” only to members of her family. Her writings were intended for her private sphere, wherein her descendants might learn more of their parents’ and grandparents’ lives with the U.S. Army. Yet she succeeded in describing far more than a personal life. Born inBaltimorein 1838 at the beginning of the railroad era, she crossed the continent many times, and her “Recollections” depict a period of intense development in theUnited States, which was growing into both a continental and world power. When Fanny Dunbar married the young Yankee contract surgeon William Henry Corbusier, little did she realize that their future would be played out against a world panorama. [download]
