International Human Resource Management

International Human Resource Management

By: Monir H. Thayeb

The chapter sets the scene for the rest of the book by discussing general issues of concern to multinational companies and then homes in on the main purpose of the book, management of human resources across diverse national boundaries. The chapter will also draw a distinction between large-scale multinational operations such as those undertaken by IBM,Toyota, Philips, and Microsoft, and small-scale operations which might involve only a handful of neighbouring nations or specialised niche international markets. The implications of the size of multinational operations for HRM will be emphasised throughout the book as and where appropriate. The concept of HRM, its components and its various models have been extensively defined and discussed in non-international oriented books on HRM. This chapter gives a summary of these discussions and models and, given the international nature of the book, points out the American origins of the HRM. [download]
