In the two decades before 1661,England,Scotland, andIrelandexperienced civil wars, invasions, regicide, religious radicalism, experiments in non-monarchical forms of government, and, in the end, restoration of the Stuart monarchy. These events have long been recognized as central to the history of England,Ireland, andScotland. More recently scholars have worked to illuminate how the histories of the three fit together, thinking in terms of “the War of the Three Kingdoms,” for example. that the Stuart colonies in the wider Atlantic world also shared in this history has not been widely appreciated or even fully explored.
