George Henry Thomas won praise, distinction, and promotion in three wars. He was among the top field commanders on either side in the Civil War. At Chickamauga, he displayed his tenacious abilities of defense, saving the Union army from destruction, and earning the sobriquet of “The Rock of Chickamauga.” At Nashville, he exhibited to the fullest his capacities for offensive action, scoring what many military historians feel to be one of the most complete victories of all time, second only to Napoleon’s triumph at Austerlitz, earning him the title of “The Sledge of Nashville.” He began the war in the east, winning two minor affairs against the Confederate leader who would later be known as “Stonewall” Jackson, before being transferred to Kentucky, following the battle of First Manassas.
