The Prudence of Mr. Gordon Brown

I have been interested in the interaction between politics and economics from a disturbingly early age. As someone who grew up during and after the Second World War, I have vivid childhood memories of wartime controls, ration books, and the ‘Age of Austerity’ presided over by the Attlee governments of 1945-51. For a long time bananas were plastic toys dangling from the ceilings of greengrocers’ shops. The most popular pupil in school was the boy who arrived one day at the end of the war with real bananas. I remember the 1945 general election. On VE Day I had innocently asked my father whether there would be any more news now that the war was over. His firm answer was: Yes, Churchill had done a good job during the war, but he had leant more on Attlee the Deputy Prime Minister in the coalition government than people had realised and now it was time to throw out Churchill and the Conservatives and let Labour get on with the job.
