Edith Stein (1891-1942), who took the religious name Teresa Benedicta a Cruce (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), was beatified in 1987 and canonized eleven years later on October 11,1998, by Pope John Paul II. When the beatification process began in 1962, the advocates focused on her life and good works, arguing for her case based on heroic virtue; however, in 1983, Joseph Cardinal Hoffner proposed a different route to beatification and sent a letter toRome requesting that she be considered a martyr because of her clear theology of suffering, her willingness to follow the path of the Cross and offer her life as a sacrifice, and the circumstances under which she, her sister Rosa, and approximately 300 other baptized Christians of Jewish descent were sent to Auschwitz.
