In a remarkably short period from about 1870 to 1950 the United Statesexperienced a series of incredible changes. In fact, there never was a period in human history when so much changed in such a short time. A host of inventions led the way in transforming daily life inventions that included the telephone (1876), the electric light (1879), the recording of sound (1876), electric power to homes and work places (1882), the automobile (1890s), the airplane (1903), motion pictures (1895), radio broadcasting (1920), and television (1930s). To illustrate this era, I’ll use the lifetime of one American, the novelist Willa Cather, whose life spanned nearly all of these years.
