Early on the chilly morning of January 20, 2009, more than a million people gathered along the National Mall inWashington, D.C., eager to see history being made. The occasion was the inauguration of the forty-fourth president of the United States, Barack Obama, the nation’s first African-American president. As the crowds gathered in the vast space between the WashingtonMonumentand the Capitol, many more prepared to watch the inauguration on television or the Internet.
