Understanding Children: Foundations for Quality

Children’s growth and progress through life is largely dependent on the physical, social and emotional surroundings in which they spend their formative years. Early childhood care-providers have a critical role in developing social competence in young children. We have evidence that if a child is unable to develop effective social relationships with their peers by around six years of age, then that child may be at risk of encountering later academic failure and dropping out of school. Young children require quality environments in order to thrive socially, academically and emotionally.
