Care of Collections

The collections manager cannot consider the care of collections in isolation; it is neither an end in itself nor can it be divorced from the socio-political circumstances which determine its provision. Museums have rarely developed from national or regional plans. They are invariably the relics of a local decision made by a previous generation in response to the perceived needs of their time. The majority of museums can trace their origins to the collections of ‘great’ men and women, or those of the various learned societies which became fashionable particularly during the nineteenth century. Thus museums as a phenomenon have their own historical dimension, and it is this which often impedes a logical pattern of collection acquisition and care.
