When I was a young boy, my family lived in the Middle East nearJerusalem. My father was an archaeologist, and at the time he was excavating a site called Caesarea Maritima, the seat of the Roman Empire inPalestineon the coast of theMediterranean. One Saturday afternoon, we were preparing to have tea in the garden of an archaeological institution known as the Albright School of Oriental Research when three gentlemen arrived to speak with my father. For lack of anything better to do that day, I went with my father to greet his guests. When we reached the lobby of the institution, two enormous forest green doors swung open. In the doorway stood the three gentlemen, one in a gray suit with a white shirt and a spectacular purple tie. The other two were slightly taller, wearing black jackets, black vests, and black hats.
