Guard Force Management

Like Topsy in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, many security companies just “growed.” They began as small operations, which expanded into organizational nightmares. Sooner or later, the survival of the company required a reorganization that was painful and disruptive. Sadly, much of this disruption could have been avoided if the organization had, at its inception, focused on the necessary tasks and functions that need to be performed throughout the life of a company. Peter Drucker, in his landmark book, Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices, points out that “organization does not start with structure but with building blocks; . . . each enterprise needs to design around the key activities appropriate to its mission and its strategies” (Drucker, 1974, p. 517). By focusing on function rather than organization, the guard company can position itself to adapt to future growth. [download]
